Fast forward to chapter 4 or 5 and through unknown circumstances, (maybe it's a secret path, or a secret boss, or even just the normal boss) you get the shadow mantle. Place the items at the foot of the cliff. THEN, you need to go back in time. Go to chapter 3 in a new savefile and go back to where you put it.

The Shadow Crystals offer glimpses into the "Truth" of the lands, showing what they look like without the shadow's influence. I don't think their effect changes in the "Real" world.
